THE LATEST NEWS ON BARCELÓ DOLPHINS

This is a quick update on the latest developments of the scandalous Barceló dolphinarium as things are unfolding fast and there's still so much more to come!

UPDATE ON THE BARCELO DOLPHINS

Basically this week has been full on for Barcelo after shocking drone footage by Urgent Seas of the tiny dolphin tank went viral and more protests took place outside Barcelo Hotels in Mexico and Spain. Pressure is on Barcelo as newspaper articles on this topic are being published daily.

On top of this, on 29th January we shared a tragic video of a dolphin jumping from the tank and misjudging the boundary and hitting the concrete tank. The poor dolphin probably weighed around 250kgs and fell from a great height. The dolphin was visibly injured.

Due to the exposure on Barcelo, Mexico's environmental services, the PROFEPA, have finally announced that they will investigate the two alleged dolphin deaths from 2019; Plata and Alex. Both these dolphins were captured in the Solomon Islands and both had cataracts in their eyes. Why it's taken the PROFEPA 6 years to respond to these deaths though is another topic of its own.

The PROFEPA has also announced it will investigate the accident where the dolphin misjudged the jump and landed on the concrete tank.

We now believe that this dolphin was Mincho and we believe Mincho is dead. We think this accident took place around 2021/2022.

On top of this, we believe that another dolphin, Kala, died recently in Barceló only around 2 weeks ago. Kala is a captive born female. As of yet we do not know why Kala died, but we urge anyone with any information of Kala's death to talk to us.

There are normally around 4-5 dolphins confined in the Barcelo tank at any given time. Although Barcelo owns the dolphinarium, it is run by the company Dolphinaris. Dolphinaris has 5 dolphinariums locally in this same region, and around 45-55 dolphins in total. It is common for Dolphinaris to switch the dolphins between parks, especially if they are trying to cover up a missing dolphin, which is what we believe they did with Kala's death.

We believe that as soon as they discovered Kala's death, they pulled her dead body out and swapped her for a different dolphin which they got from Bahia Principe dolphinarium.

BAHIA PRINCIPE HOTEL

The Bahia Principe Hotel is another Spanish chain of hotels, and it also contains a tiny dolphinarium, very similar to that of Barcelo. The tank is also run by Dolphinaris and it's very close to Barcelo. Strangely enough about a week ago, this dolphinarium very quietly shut down! Although this is wonderful news, we thought we'd give you some background as to how this hotel has been embroiled in the Barcelo scandal.

When Kala died, we think that Dolphinaris pulled another dolphin out of Hotel Bahia Principe to quickly put it in the Barcelo tank so no one would notice one of the dolphins was missing. This all took place just days before our planned protest outside the front of the hotel. Barcelo know they are being monitored by us, so as you can imagine, they would probably be keen to replace Kala as soon as possible. As if this wasn't bad enough we heard rumours that the hotel owner was getting nervous about the amount of negative publicity Barcelo was receiving and didn't want the fall out to come back on them. It appears they tried to jump ship before they also got caught up in the eye of the storm.

Nice try!

Therefore, we would like everyone to know that we believe 4 dolphins have died in the Barcelo tank since 2019.

1 Plata 2019

2 Alex 2019/2020

3 Mincho 2021/2022

4 Kala Jan 2025

We will be giving these specific details to the PROFEPA for their investigation. In the meantime, we welcome all members of the public to contact the PROFEPA to alert them about these 4 dolphin deaths
