Barceló Riviera Maya Hotel in Mexico has one of the smallest Dolphinariums in the country and holds 4 adult males, some captured from the wild. The hotel swimming pool is much bigger than the dolphin tank.
This dolphinarium is one of the worst tanks in Mexico. It is small and shallow with absolutely no shade. These dolphins are forced to perform all day, everyday, without reprieve from the hot mexican sun, and the worst part is that they are only a short distance from their true home, the ocean, and can hear the ocean waves crashing in the background as they perform.
2 dolphins died in this tank in one year alone.
The Company running the Barceló tank, The Dolphin Company, has a terrible track record of negligent care and as we speak is currently being thrown out of Miami for animal abuse inside the Miami Seaquarium.
So far, 34 animal welfare organisations have contacted the CEO's of Barceló
both in Spain and Mexico to alert them to the terrible conditions the dolphins are enduring. Despite the overwhelming consensus of opinion, Barceló have not made any response, and have not felt the need to address this issue in any way, despite being asked to cease these practices and close the dolphinarium. The dolphinarium remains open, and dolphins continue to be tortured to death in the name of entertainment, and profit.
We are now calling on all reputable companies who implement ethical and environmentally responsible accountability, to drop all links with Barceló, business and otherwise. We are calling for a Boycott of the Barceló company. This will expose their practices to a much wider public scrutiny. It will let the hotel chain group know that it is not acceptable to imprison marine life for profit anymore. Also, it will highlight the great chasm of difference between companies that are seen as humane and responsible in their principles, and those that are quite shamelessly not.
The tide of Tourism as a business is turning. There is a growing market for ‘ethical
tourism’, and within this paradigm Animal Captivity and Dolphin Captivity is outdated.
Those businesses that choose to align with us will be rewarded by the conferring of
positive ethical status upon them, and that in itself is good for business. We mention
this as an economic incentive for any business, whose ultimate need is to make
money and survive even if their sympathies are at best ambivalent.
We are starting to compile a list of companies to approach, and would welcome any
specific information or names of companies known to do business with, or be in
partnership with Barceló.
We understand that Riviera Maya Barceló hotel has a lot to offer large corporations, such a huge site to offer large bookings. However, there are other hotels in the area which are also big and don't confine dolphins for profit. When Barceló realize ethical companies don't want to work with them anymore, all they have to do is simply close the dolphin tank and then they can regain their customer base as before.
We will continue to fight unceasingly for the freedom of those in Captivity, and by all legal means, until Barceló closes their dolphinarium and ceases the trade in suffering and death.
